Life has not gone according to plan for Thomas Pelter. After he helped stop the marauding French at Carbonear Island and was appointed Captain in the King’s service, he thought he was set for the rest of his days. But then the war ended and Thomas was released from his duties. To make ends meet, he was forced to return to the despised cod fishery. To complicate matters, Thomas has become a family man with a wife and two small children. He struggles to protect his young family while eking out a living on the rugged shores of Newfoundland with its unforgiving sea and harsh land.
Thomas must also honour the memory of his father. The shadow of John Pelter looms large, and the scorn and prejudice from having been raised in a shameful home resurfaces in Thomas’ life. Like always, he is prepared to fight for the truth. So, when a desperate plea for help arrives from his sister in England, Thomas is compelled to go. Across the sea, Thomas discovers that life in the big city can be easy for someone without responsibilities. A world of entertainment and leisure has its appeal for someone who has laboured for his whole existence. Yet not everything is as it seems in a city so large the unwary can disappear without a trace. Sometimes, things are too good to be true. Thomas must guard against the present while battling his past and decide where he belongs, once and for all.
