Joe Cross is the mighty Penguin Hunter, proud of his reputation for being willing to do just about anything in pursuit of the black and white flightless birds located off Newfoundland’s northeast coast. Even when the penguin numbers began to decline and other hunters shifted to the lucrative codfish industry, Joe held firm. For the Penguin Hunter, tough times meant sacrifices had to be made. And when it came to maintaining his business, no sacrifice was too great, not even his family.
With his life in turmoil and the penguin population in freefall, Joe is desperate to find new hunting grounds. He knows the penguins are still nesting somewhere, just not on Penguin Island. Desperate to continue his hunt and maintain his business, Joe embarks on a perilous journey to find the only people who might be able to help him: the reclusive Beothuks. Like all Englishmen, Joe thinks the Beothuks are little better than lowlife thieves. But what he finds is a proud, warrior people who desire nothing more than to be left alone to live their lives as they have for millennia.
With new understanding comes reflection, and Joe wonders if his years of sacrifice have truly been for his family or his own ego. Permitted a glimpse into the Beothuk world that takes him across Newfoundland’s vast and wild interior, Joe learns that it is not just the penguins that are teetering on the brink of extinction. Pushed by the white man’s unsatiated desire for more, Joe wonders if either can survive.
